The Story
Hackney Dudes is a local social group in Hackney for men aged 50+, many of whom are vulnerable, isolated and unsupported.
The group meets weekly on Friday mornings at Dalston Eastern Curve Garden in Hackney. The Dudes enjoy a safe, friendly and welcoming space, before the Garden opens to the public, where they can come together, socialise, and build lasting friendships.
The Garden provides a healthy vegetarian lunch, catering for around 40 men each week. One of our members (a former professional cook), provides cookery demonstrations and members can learn about healthy food choices. Food is a huge draw - helping us attract new members and support older men who are struggling with the cost of living.
The Dudes group has been in existence for over six years. The membership has grown to over 55 members, demonstrating the need for a local mens’ group like this, where members have ownership and control, and feel pride in the community that's been created. The Dudes is the biggest mens' group in Hackney, and (probably) one of the biggest in London. We get several new referrals a week - beyond our current capacity - so there's a waiting list for new members.
Additional funding was available in the last couple of years for members to enjoy day trips to the seaside, museums, art galleries and many other attractions in London and beyond. The trips are fantastic opportunities to make memories the group can bond over.
Out of the Friday meetups have sprung several splinter groups, such as: a short mat bowling club, a weekly Arts & Craft group, and The Hackney Dudes Community Band which meets every week for rehearsals and regularly performs at venues such as care homes in the borough. Outside of the project, Dudes have taught each other new skills, helped each other out during difficult times, and some have even gone on holiday together.
We believe that encouraging positive mental health in older men is a vital issue that is addressed by offering active opportunities like the Hackney Dudes, which helps build a community of support for people experiencing social isolation in older age.
Members have spoken about how attending the group helps them to combat loneliness, anxiety and depression. It encourages them to leave their homes and meet other men for friendship and support in a friendly and relaxed setting. Alongside peer support, the Dudes also have access to professional advice and practical support from our staff for any problems they are facing.
One Dude told us that “There’s no doubt about it. It gives you some kind of hope. Especially when you are alone. It makes a big difference. You have got someone with you. I have made friends here.”
